Some of our human challenges can be difficult to verbalize – we don’t always have the words to explain what we are feeling. Because horses are naturally authentic, empathetic, and fully present in the moment, they can help us to acknowledge and to truly experience our true feelings, rather than trying to rationalize them from a logical point of view. In this way, they can help us to heal on a deep level: from our hearts, as well as from our minds.

…Horses [are] highly effective in helping people reintegrate mind and body, increase awareness of unconscious behavior patterns, and develop the self-confidence, stress management, and assertiveness skills that lead to increased success in relationships, career, school, and parenting” (from The Tao of Equus by Linda Kohanov).

Equine Centered Counseling

Facilitated by healing professionals Katie Browning and Michelle Kaye, Equine Centered Counseling strengthens one’s self-awareness by accessing our natural body/mind connection through relationship with horses.

Using the principals of Centered Riding® and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Equine Centered Counseling opens the door to the healing process in a unique way. Therefore, either from the ground or in the saddle - with our horses or with yours - by combining these two modalities you will:

  • Experience greater mind/body awareness
  • Feel a stronger connection with self
  • Overcome obstacles and habitual behaviors
  • Gain healthy communication skills
  • Learn tools for stress relief and relaxation

Centered Riding® accesses our physical selves by utilizing the following principles on horseback and on the ground:

  • Breath awareness, using soft eyes; finding the physical and energetic center of the body; and using the imagery of building blocks to access correct body posture.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy accesses our emotional and mental aspects of self by experientially incorporating horses in the counseling process for healing and growth, on the ground as well as in the saddle.

Equine Centered Counseling addresses challenges for people of any age, experienced and inexperienced riders alike, such as:

  • Self-Esteem
  • Communication difficulties between horse and rider
  • Chronic illness/Chronic pain, including:
    • Equine-related injuries
    • Complications from Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer, & Fibromyalgia
    • Menstrual pain
    • Structural challenges (such as scoliosis)
  • ADD and ADHD challenges
  • Anxiety and/or Depression
  • Performance anxiety around competition
  • Grief and loss issues (including divorce issues for children and their parents)
  • Challenging relationship issues
  • Abuse
  • Feeling “stuck” in unhealthy habits or behaviors
