The Big View Ranch Story:
In 2002, Kate and Shawn were searching for property on which to open an equine therapy center when they were involved in a serious motorcycle accident. Kate suffered a near fatal traumatic brain injury. The trauma was so significant the brain centers controlling Kate’s speech and motor skills were surgically removed. Shawn was told by Kate’s neurosurgeon that, if by some miracle she did survive, she would never walk or talk again.But Kate astounded the medical community when she survived and recovered enough to walk, talk, ride horses and drive a car within a year of the accident.
Fulfilling the goal of finding property and opening their center kept Kate motivated to stay focused through her rehabilitation. They began offering therapeutic riding classes on a limited basis in 2003. However, the couple was forced to suspend operations as Kate’s condition mysteriously deteriorated over the next four years and she became completely incapacitated.
The solving of Kate’s medical mystery and her return to full health is chronicled in Shawn and Kate’s book, I Am Not Supposed To Be Here, which was published in October of 2009. A portion of the proceeds from the book goes to fund the equine therapy center.
